"Dr. Tiller, they're gathering again." The nurse timidly mentioned as she came into work that morning.

"Did they let you through?" Dr. Tiller asked, his brow furrowing.

"Yes, the entrance wasn't blocked and they didn't throw anything today."

"Well, I guess we can't call the police in to cart them away," He sighed. "I always like some entertainment after my coffee," he smiled.

The nurse smiled back, relaxing. Dr. Tiller didn't always find them amusing, especially since their very presence abused his staff and patients.

"Did they have any new slogans this time around?"

"Same as usual. 'Abortion is murder' and 'You will burn in hell!' There was also the 'Dr. Satan'. Oh wait!" She exclaimed, grinning. "There was some some kind of toothless bumpkin in overalls without a shirt holding a sign that read this," She said, taking a pen from one of the medical charts.

Dr. Tiller handed her a scrap of paper where she wrote "Babys are Gods meracal! Stop the murdar!"

They both laughed. "Thanks, Lizzie, it never gets old," Dr. Tiller shook his head, still grinning as he grabbed the chart with the missing pen.

Dr. Tiller's face expressed no emotion as he walked over the charred remains of his clinic. The arsonists had firebombed his clinic last night and left almost nothing. He stared at the blackened file cabinets that held the ashes of his patients' records he maintained over the years. He walked over to what was once an examination room and brushed some of the soot off an exam table.

"I can't take this anymore, George," His wife, Jeanne, sobbed. "I told you that all the picketing and threats weren't enough for them. What will it take for us to leave this place?"

"We can't leave Wichita, Jeanne," He replied, calmly. "That would just be telling them that we gave up and they win. Women in the community count on me to help them when no other physician will. This clinic belonged to my father and it belongs to me. This will not be the end of it. My family has been here for generations. My roots are here, your roots are here. We will stay and we will fight."

"How can we fight through this, George?" Her eyes narrowed as she handed him a piece of paper. "I found this here a few minutes ago."

Dr. Tiller took the note. "A taste of the hell that is waiting for you."

"They want to leave us a message?" He smiled. We can leave them a message too. He turned around and headed for the dumpster across the parking lot.

"George, where are you going?" Mrs. Tiller called out.

He came back with a piece of cardboard and pulled a pen out of his lapel. In big letters, which he would later go over with a sharpie he wrote, "Hell no. We won't go."

"Dr. Tiller?" Nurse Janning inquired, stepping into the aging Doctor's office. "You have more fan mail. Would you like me to read it today before your first appointment?"

"Why not?" Dr. Tiller smiled.

"Dr. Tiller," read the nurse, "I am writing to you today because I know it is still possible to save your soul. Even though you commit the heinous act of murdering God's precious creations, He is a forgiving God and if you renounce your baby-killing ways now, you may not burn in hell. You will be saving the lives of the women you mutilate and they will understand that your salvation was a blessing and become wonderful, caring mothers. While you have committed many atrocities posing as a 'Doctor', it is never too late to confess your sins and save your life," Nurse Elizabeth paused, "She then continues with the name of her congregation and contact information."

"Oh what a caring individual!" Dr. Tiller exclaimed sarcastically, "Maybe I won't burn in hell, but just roast a little?" He laughed, approaching the Nurse and taking her chart. "So who do we have here today?"

"A 15 year old Veronica is here without any family. She's scared, but Nurse Troy is talking with her now."

"That's good," Dr. Tiller said, leaving the office with the nurse.

"You know, those stupid right wing pundits have made you the star of one of their shows," She said, off-hand. "They think they're being all creative when they call you "Tiller the Baby Killer," she snorted.

"Oh yeah, that was new back when?"

"1992, probably," she smirked.

He put his hand on her shoulder and walked with her down to the exam room. "See, Lizzie, after 30 years, you know I've heard worse."

Based on the life of Dr. George Tiller who was assassinated in 2009. Dr. Tiller was renowned as a physician who performed late-term abortions when very few other doctors in the US would. All of these abortions were in cases of severe deformity, or if it would cause substantial physical or mental damage to the mother.

He survived constant death threats, picketing, his clinic being fire-bombed, being shot 5 times in the arms, and a media firestorm to help women in Wichita, Kansas, for nearly 35 years before he was murdered at a church function.

The world lost a Great Hero

I was a service provider. I was a physician. The patients needed abortions, and I did them. It is my fundamental philosophy that patients are emotionally, mentally, morally, spiritually and physically competent to struggle with complex health issues and come to decisions that are appropriate for them.

I really can't understand the lengths that people will go to, to try to kill these doctors and other staff who work at places like this, in the name of their god. How could you perpetrate such violence and then in the next breath, argue that you believe in Jesus Christ, one of the figureheads of nonviolence?

This was a great tribute. Well done. And good to see you back :)

I find the people who picket abortion clinics pretty appalling since these women go in on the worst days of their lives to deal with that nonsense. Obviously the most extreme protestors, "terrorists" being a better term in my opinion, have really warped minds where their acts are justified. I'd like to say they're insane, but Tiller's murderer was competent and said he wanted to "save the unborn children".

Thanks! I didn't think I'd actually get something written, to be honest. But I've never actually quit in the 4 seasons I've done this, so I didn't want to this season!

HAH! Well that might keep me in the competition. It would certainly make things very exciting.

There may be people in the competition who are against abortion, but I'm also sure that none of them support such extremism.

That's my line of thought. I wondered if this could start an anti-abortion feud... but I highly doubt anyone here would feel that killing someone is justified. I sure as heck hope not.

It's never justified. These abortion doctors going around killing babies. They're nothing short of murderers!

They're going to hell!

I started hearing about "Tiller the Baby Killer" shortly before his death. It was only after he died where I learned about him and what he stood for. He and his family put up with so much. His clinic also sadly shut down.

Oh I had no doubt that people would be respective. I don't see anyone at this stage in the competition being that big of a troll to claim the death was justified or something.

He did what he knew was needed, and did not deserve to die.

Dr. Tiller certainly put up with a lot of abuse. What I respect the most about him is that he never gave up and would always come out stronger. After he was shot the first time, after his clinic got burned down, he refused to leave Kansas because he felt like he was needed there.

I know very little about what kind of personality he had, but in the interviews I've read from him, he had to learn to remain calm after all the backlash over his practice.

It's always blown my mind that some supposed "pro-lifers" say that abortion is murder, but see nothing wrong with trying to kill anyone who provides that service. Don't they realize the irony? What do they think they're doing - petting puppies?

Thank you for writing this.

Yeah the reaction to his death was pretty disgusting too, from the most ardent pro-lifers who claimed his death was justified.

I cannot understand how some people can use violence and death as a solution to what they are protesting: violence and death. It simply is not rational.

From: [identity profile] majesticzaichik.livejournal.com
That's true, violence and death is never the answer. It's why terrorism can never achieve anything but misery.
