Today went pretty well overall, except I did poorly on my second math midterm. The first one I got an A, the second a C. I stayed up until too late last night( -_-) so I went to sleep after classes got out and slept until around 7, skipping my math section. It would have made me bummed anyway, going to look over the test. I don't think I can pull an A from any of my classes, I was hoping pre calc might do it, but I think I'd have to ace the final... I got a B on my history paper(that itseld is worth 35% of my grade 0_o) and was pretty thrilled. I'm really debating as to whether I want to rewrite it or not. That'd take effort I don't know if I want to perform. My TA says that the paper was meant to be rewritten(the whole class, not I). She said it was good and looked forward to rereading it, and me having such an admiration for my TA, I dunno ;_;.
Um, in order to find out whether I could enroll for Japanese next semester, I went to the Japanese professor's office hours , was surprised when there were 4 people ahead of me, therby forcing me to miss a lot of math class ^_^*. She gave me a kanji list for the first quarter since I wanted to go over it, and I was most pleased that out of the 26 kanji, there were only 1 or 2 that I couldn't recognize. Must have learned more kanji than I thought.... She e-mailed me and said I could enroll on wednesday, but it was during math class again -_-. Ugh. I can make it in, it's just irritating. I've also heard that her pace is rather quick... so I'm worried about that. I didn't learn anything in Japanese class my 4th semester at the JC ^_^**.
The subject of Disney's Pocahantas has been critisized ever since it came out ... I was in 5th grade and I still remember when I first watched it with Kaffi... damn. Seriously, I remember I had this thing about asking all kinds of dumb questions about how accurate the movie was at THAT time, but it was all centered towards the wrong areas. One thing I particularily remember "Did they have shovels back then?!" Kathi: yeah... "I don't believe it!" Kathi: they did!. XD. Then i remember her researching the true story of Pocahantas, heh. I must say that besides Lion King, there has been no other movie I've been more obsessed with 0_o.I *still* was able to sing most of the songs along with the movie ^_^*.
I've come to realize that the movie is historically innacurate, but didn't know the extent of it, so I was pretty pleased to find a special presentation of it my college offered. I really think that some things they looked too deeply into -_-. Or maybe I was in denial They were displeased at the sexual conduct in the movie when they were playing the Colors of the Wind song(when they were rolling down the hill and such), and also with the word "savage" and "injun" being used in it. They used the comparison of using the word "nigger" in a Disney movie. Yeah, that wouldn't ever happen, but I took a different approach to that. A part of the whole "Colors of the Wind" song was to prove to John Smith that she wasn't a savage, and her people were not, she knew more about the land than they ever would. Many Native Americans were deeply insulted by the way they were portrayed, as spiritual and "bloodthirsty". But the truth is, many native american cultures were deeply rooted in tribal warefare, though very much unlike the Europeans, they strongly advocated "an eye for an eye". Though I'm not certain about the Powatan culture, I'm lead to believe that they lived similarily... So when the student teacher commented about the opening scene with the warriors coming home from battle, I was quite inspired to refute that : ). Also, they nver mentioned what *was* accurate about the movie... I'm sure there was some underlying principle ^_^*.
Some facts about the real context of Pocahantas's life
*She was a very unnatractive princess and was 12 when she met John Smith
*John Smith advocated the killing of Natie American men, women, and children.
- The story goes like this. Yeah, the original Jamestown settlers were really peaceful with the Indians for years until they refused to trade them guns for food, the Powhatan refused to give them any more food, and the settlers attacked their villiages, therby inciting the Powhatan to fleed leaving the colony to starve(the mortality rate was pretty phenomenal, heh, I remember hearing it during history lecture). Anyway, he was somehow initiated into the Powhatan tribe through this ceremony where he was to be reborn a Powhatan, a member of the tribe. I'm not sure how the ceremony went(nevermind, I researched it), when she protected Smith from harm by leaping in front of him and sheildng him, it was probably a part of the ceremony. He was displeased at the way of life in Virginia and made it back to England, encouraging new settlers to kill the Natives. He met Pocahantas there, by coincidence, and was chewed out by her for not keeping in contact with him, since they were supposed to have a sibling relationship in accordance with the initiation ceremony he undertook.
*Pocahantas married a Powhatan man named Kocoum and had a child with him
- He was in the movie, portrayed as a violent warrior who almost killed John Smith ^_^*, but was shot instead by one of his men. The people in charge of this were pretty furious at how his death was taken by the tribe. Shortly after he dies, he's not mentioned again, John Smith's life was given greater importance.
*She was later kidnapped and married off to John Rolfe; she never had a romantic relationship with John Smith.
-Hey, that was in the sequel! XD
*is very tired ;_;* Now I'm off to play video games and go to bed... yesh. Hope this has been an interesting history lesson.
